Spring Break 2024

For the first time I can remember, the 5 of us were not together for Spring Break.  Lauren went to the ever popular 30A with 4 of her friends (and one brave mom!).  It was the mass exodus of Louisville to Florida for Spring Break, which happens every year around this time.  As Lauren said, there were more people in her snap map in FL than KY!

The other 4 of us stayed in KY for the majority of the time.  Drew played some soccer, Ali did some gymnastics, I played some tennis and Brad went to work.  The most excitement happened on Tuesday night when we were holed up in the basement as a tornado went pretty much right over our neighborhood and touched down about a mile from here.  Ali was actually at gymnastics at the time, taking cover in the interior bathrooms!  We were in the basement, watching the channel where one of the dad of one of Drew's friends is a weatherman.  Drew was texting with his friend and told him that he heard glass breaking (however he was the only one who heard that!), and a couple of minutes later the weatherman referenced the text on the air.  Drew was amazed!

Fortunately, we came through the storm with only a few pieces of furniture tossed around in the backyard.  Several of the homes in Hunting Creek and Buckner were not so lucky, as some roofs were completely torn off, and lots of other damage.  The silver lining is that no one was injured; many of the houses were probably empty due to spring break and most of the houses have basements.  The traffic on the roads was light as well due to spring break, as the storm came through right around rush hour.

Thursday morning, the remaining Scheiners headed north to Michigan bright and early en route to Ann Arbor the the college gymnastics regionals.  It was the first college gymnastics event for Drew and I; Brad and Ai attended meets in Ann Arbor and Lexington last year.  Michigan competed against Alabama, Penn State and Kent State.  It was pretty exciting and a lot more efficient than club gymnastics meets, as there are far fewer gymnasts competing.  Only 6 per team on each event as well as a few individual competitors.  Michigan did well until the last event: beam, where they lost the chance to continue to the next round.  The first gymnast fell and then the third gymnast fell.  It was a sad ending to the meet where Alabama and Penn State advanced.  There is the possibility that 2 of the gymnasts will still advance to nationals as individuals in the all around due to their high scores!

After the meet, we went to everyone's favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor: Pizza House!  Compared the football weekends which is the primary reason for my visits to Ann Arbor, it was empty.  We had a great meal and then headed to the hotel for a quick nap before Round 2: Oklahoma, Ohio State, Illinois and NC State.  Oklahoma is the best team ever.  They have won the championship in 3 of the last 4 years (Michigan won the other year), so they were fun to watch.  I can see why they are so dominate!  Their beam routines were all top notch, with very few wobbles.  Illinois and Ohio State were SO close going into the final rotation; however Ohio State was bit more precise and secured the second spot to advance to the next round.

We got back to KY around noon on Friday, so it was a very quick trip but nice to get out of town for a hot minute.  I am looking forward to seeing Lauren tonight!!!!
